Meet Katie- Organic Gardening Specialist

Raised in the Rocky Mountains, I have always had a heart for fields & flowers. So it's quite natural, I suppose, that I would end up planting things for a living. But truth be told, I didn't always have a green thumb, nor a concentrated interest in gardening. Nope, my skills came about quite unintended. I did have a penchant for all things natural, green, and pure, however. I was hiking trails, camping, and reading books in meadows for as long as I can remember.  But it wasn't until I decided to eat ultra-healthy that I realized the value of growing my own organic food. At the time I was traveling for a year in an RV exploring the world and didn't have a home of my own with space for a garden, so I began to pray for land. And, meanwhile, I started voraciously reading every gardening book that I could get my hands on- from composting to building healthy soil, to learning the best conditions for fruits & vegetables and all the endless varieties, to the tender care of annuals and perennials, to irrigation lines, pest identification, and frost dates..... And on and on it went for several years- my hands not yet able to toil in soil of my own. Although, I do remember scouting out 'humus' wherever I went and sinking my hands deep in a few unsuspecting flower beds and vegetable gardens-just to smell it, just to feel it! And, on more than one occasion, volunteered or workamped at organic gardens to learn mystical skills from the pros! I was eventually blessed with some land of my own and began planting a plethora of greenery from flowers and vegetables to shrubs and citrus trees. Each new plant a learning curve, and every day was exhilarating- come sunshine or blessed rain!  And my first gardens? Astonishingly lovely- much to my surprise!  I've developed quite a sense for it and I've been gardening like a mad-woman ever since: ·         in my own yard ·         on farms and ranches ·         with private school programs ·         for individuals and families And now branching out to bring the joy of gardening to ·         assisted living facilities, group homes, 55+ communities, and other locations. One of my greatest joys is to share gardening with others; teaching wherever I can- with whoever would like to learn. I love to see the happiness and wonder on each and every face. Whether you are nine or ninety-nine, gardening leaves the cares of the day far behind!  I love my job! Of note* I was a youth leader for 15 years, I have sang and played guitar in assisted living facilities, and I have taught many healthy cooking classes in 55+Communities!
